3-Point vs. 4-Point vs. 5-Point Harnesses: Which Do You Need?

3-Point vs. 4-Point vs. 5-Point Harnesses: Which Do You Need?

A racing harness keeps you planted in your seat, so you can focus on driving instead of bracing yourself. But harnesses come in several configurations, and the number of points makes a real difference in how they hold you. Here's what separates 3-, 4- and 5-point harnesses and how to choose the right one for your go-kart, UTV or track car.

What Does "Point" Mean?

The point count is the number of anchor points that attach the harness to the vehicle. More points means more straps sharing the load and less room for your body to move. Each design also changes how easy the harness is to buckle, adjust and live with.

3-Point Harness

A 3-point harness works like a standard car seat belt, with a lap belt and a single diagonal shoulder strap. Racing-style versions add wider webbing, shoulder padding and quick-release buckles. They're simple and familiar, which makes them a popular choice for go-karts, golf carts and recreational UTVs.

The limitation is that one shoulder strap restrains only one side of your upper body, so your torso can still twist and shift in hard turns or over big bumps.

4-Point Harness

A 4-point harness uses two shoulder straps and a lap belt that meet at a central buckle. Holding both shoulders keeps your torso upright and centered, which is a big upgrade for side-by-sides, trail rigs and track-day cars. Most 4-point harnesses are easy to install and quick to get in and out of.

The weakness is the lack of a strap between the legs. In a hard frontal impact, the lap belt can ride up and let your body slide forward underneath it. This is called submarining, and it's why serious racing setups add a sub strap.

5-Point Harness

A 5-point harness adds an anti-submarine strap that runs from the buckle down between your legs. That fifth strap keeps the lap belt low on your hips and stops you from sliding under it, so the whole system works together. It's the standard choice for racing, and many sanctioning bodies that require harnesses call for 5-point or 6-point systems certified to SFI or FIA standards.

2-Inch vs. 3-Inch Webbing

Strap width matters, too. Wider 3-inch webbing spreads force over a larger area and tends to feel more comfortable on long drives. Narrower 2-inch straps are lighter and are often chosen by drivers who wear a head-and-neck restraint, because they sit neatly on the device's yoke. Shoulder pads add comfort with either width.

How to Fit and Mount a Harness

Even the best harness can't do its job if it's installed poorly. Keep these basics in mind, and use a qualified installer if you're unsure:

  • Use a seat with harness slots, ideally a fixed-back seat, so the straps pass straight through the shell.
  • Mount the shoulder straps behind the seat to a harness bar or roll cage, close to level with your shoulders. A common guideline is no more than about 20 degrees below shoulder height.
  • Keep the lap belt low across your hip bones, never over your stomach, and tighten it before you snug up the shoulder straps.
  • Anchor to solid structure, such as the chassis, roll cage or approved mounting points, and follow the harness maker's instructions.
  • Inspect and replace. Check the webbing for fraying, cuts and sun fading, and replace any harness after a major impact.

For street use, check your local regulations. In many places, a racing harness doesn't replace the factory seat belt, so keep your original belts installed and working.

Which Harness Should You Choose?

  • Casual rides in go-karts, golf carts or UTVs: a 3-point or 4-point harness.
  • Trail riding, dunes and track days: a 4-point at minimum, or a 5-point for extra security.
  • Competition: a 5-point or 6-point harness that meets your series' certification rules.
